Islamic Azad University is the world's sixth-largest university. It was approved and ratified by the Supreme Council of the Cultural Revolution in 1982, having been founded and established by Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani. It has an enrollment of 1.1 million students. Since its inception in 1982, it has grown both physically and academically to become one of the largest higher education institutions globally. Over the years, IAU has promoted 'higher education for all' as its key objective. IAU has two independent and 31 state university branches across Iran, and four branches in other countries: the U.A.E., the United Kingdom, Lebanon, and Afghanistan.
The first IAU entrance exam was held in February 1983 with 32 thousand participants in Shahrud, Ahwaz, Tabriz, Tehran, Rasht, Zahedan, Kerman, Mashhad, and Yazd and almost three thousand students were accepted in civil, electrical, and mechanical engineering, physics, mathematics, chemistry, metal industry, textile, and accounting majors.
The Islamic Azad University's activities quickly expanded throughout the country, so that today thousands of students are enrolling every year. Not relying on government funding, it receives charitable donations and charges tuition fees.
The certificates issued by this university are recognized by the Ministry of Science, Research, and Technology and the Ministry of Health and Medical Education for medical education. The university admits students through the National Wide Entrance Examination held by the National (Iranian) Organization of Educational Testing.
The Islamic Azad University, Zahedan Branch (IAUZ) is located in Zahedan, established on 12 December 1982, in the center of the Province of Sistan and Balochistan. Zahedan is located near Pakistan and Afghanistan.
The Islamic Azad University Zahedan Branch (IAUZ) was established as a response to the high demand for higher education. Today, it is the largest university within the Province of Sistan and Balochistan. The university receives no financial aid from the government. It is self-financed entirely by the fees it receives from the students and is run by a board of trustees.
The IAUZ has over 250 faculty members and close to 300 staff. The university has several faculties including Law & Politics, Basic Sciences, Humanities, Engineering, Linguistic, Sport, Agriculture, and Medicine from undergraduate to post-graduate levels, with a wide variety of subjects covering almost every field from social sciences to medicine and from basic sciences to theology.
The IAUZ has about 8000 students. Students are studying in more than 70 different subjects in 6 major programs of medical science, science, humanities, engineering, agriculture, and architecture and in four different degrees of undergraduate, graduate, Master and Ph.D. Until now more than 17000 students are graduated from this university.
